"You're very lucky sometimes," he replied.

They had had this conversation a few 100 times before, so it didn't surprise him that they would have it again to be honest. Regardless he figured that he would humour Theo for now.

"Let me guess, I'm lucky that I have the Alpha of one of the strongest packs in Toronto as my best friend. And on top of that Theo? Your wolf is crazy over protective of me, man."

Theo shook his head and replied, "Not exactly what I meant," he went on with a sigh, "What I meant was there are certain times that he can be extremely volatile when it comes to your safety and wellbeing," he continued, "So basically what I feel towards you, the wolf feels the same."

Ronan understood completely what he meant but chose to say nothing on the matter. He motioned towards their school, St. Francis Xavier the school he and Theo had attended since they were kids. The school itself was romanesque style and most of the buildings on the school grounds were said to be built during the 19th century.

Shortly a few hours later, their classes were done and they were headed to Ronan’s place. Theo was headed there because his guardians were working late and that's what usually happened. When they got back, they were met by Declan's and Sophie's furious faces. Declan and Sophie had been his guardians since he was really young and they were the only family that he had ever known as far as he could remember.

"Why did we both get phone calls from your school?" Sophie asked them both, "Your guardians did as well," she angrily told Theo, "I had to tell them that everything was fine!" She went on, just as angrily.

Sophie then turned on Ronan, just as angrily. He knew that if she was angry at Theo then the rage that she felt even remotely towards him would double that.

"And you! You were late again?!" She angrily asked, just as he had guessed.

"Sorry Sophie, I lost track of time. I swear it won't happen again," he replied, as his gaze drifted downwards in shame. Occasionally it would flicker over to Theo, who Ronan knew would always have his back if needed.

"It had better not," Declan said, crossing his arms, "You can't continue doing this, Ronan."

"Look Declan," Ronan shot back at him, "It won't happen again. Right Theo?" I asked my friend, hoping he could sway Sophie and Declan.

"No sir, it won't. I promise," Theo replied, thankfully defending him even though they were both late.

Finally after a while, Declan's expression softened when he gazed at Sophie, "Fine."

After a few minutes, Declan relented as a hand travelled to Ronan’s shoulder, "You have one more chance! After that I just can't handle anymore, Ronan."

"Why not?" he asked challengingly, "Is this about the parents that you refuse to tell me about?"

Sighing, Declan ran a hand exhaustedly over his face, "You know we can't do that, Ronan."

"And why not?" he asked, angrily, "I deserve to know about them!"

  "Enough Ronan!"

"Fine!" he yelled, having enough he stalked off after Theo had left and stayed in his room for the rest of the night.

Ronan awoke the following morning and noticed that his arm was laying over his head in the sunlight that was streaming in. Once he noticed, he pulled his arm sharply away, raising it to his eyes, Ronan carefully looked at his arm, inspecting it. His eyes widened when he realized that his arm was unharmed and in perfect condition. Wondering what was going on, he continued to think about it for another few minutes before he got up, took a shower, got dressed and headed downstairs so that he could tell Theo.

Feeling excited, Ronan ran outside only to be met by Theo's shocked face, which he nearly laughed at.

"Theo! Guess what?" he asked, excitedly once he finally saw his best friend, "Somehow, I can stand the sun!"

Most vampires such as the Nightwalkers were created so that ever since the outbreak they were limited to only going out during the night and doing everything at night. Ronan had been this way for as long as he could remember so a change was really weird to him.

Theo took in Ronan’s words with great difficulty, and he found himself hardly believing what he was telling him. He had always known him to be a Nightwalker so Theo sympathized with what he was feeling right now.

"I can see that, Ronan. How's that even possible?" he asked in shock, "You're a Nightwalker, isn't that permanent?"

"Yeah, I guess I'll have to ask Sophie and Declan later," he replied, "It could be just me, right?"

Theo shot him a quick glance, his eyebrows bunched up in confusion as he mused over his words.

"But how? I mean not that it's not a bad thing, but isn't it a bit odd?" He asked.

He shook my head still in awe and replied, "Who knows? But it is cool."

Laughing, Theo shook his head and jokingly shoved him, Ronan stumbled a bit and then they ran off as they entered the school. Shortly a few hours later, soon after they boarded their train and it had departed, they arrived in Toronto.

One of the first things they quickly found out about Toronto was that it was a highly populated and extremely diverse city. Over the course of the span of the civil war, Toronto became a completely different sight from what it previously had been. The city was split into two different parts, one side being untouched by the outbreak and the other was completely demolished and was a complete and utter disaster area. The former castle which was the home of the royal family was also part of the untouched side of the city according to what the tour guide told them. The castle was where President Adams resided as well as anyone who worked for him.

As they left Toronto’s Bus Terminal Station, they walked through check in, grabbed all their luggage and finally walked out to the buses that were waiting for them.

Their buses were fairly long and they were both painted chrome silver and chrome blue. When they stepped into one of the buses, they got their first look at the inside of the bus, it was all so nice. The seats were plush red and so comfortable and they matched the flooring that ran along the floor of the bus. The same applied for the driver's seat which was basically the same colour as everything else and looked like it was made of the same material.

Roughly about an hour later, they arrived at the Fairmount and shuffled out of our bus. They went in through the main entrance, and walked up to the reception desk. Once they reached it they saw a young man who had a mousy appearance with slightly, ruffled light brown hair. He had a lean build and probably stood at five foot five and wore what was most likely the hotel's uniform. The pants that he wore were a dark green colour, with a gold trim along the side. The blazer he wore was the same colour as his pants and had a gold trim to it, a name tag was safely nestled on his chest.

"Hello," he said as a chipper expression appeared on his face, "Welcome to the Fairmount Hotel, how may I help you?"

Smiling back, their teacher said, "Yes, we're all part of a group on our class trip," he continued, "May we please get a few rooms?"

The receptionist nodded and then gestured towards the elevators, "Right this way."

They followed him to the elevators, once they got to our floor they walked out and stumbled exhaustedly to their suites.

Entering their suite, one of the first things that Theo and Ronan noticed was the room was fairly small. Two large single beds took up the majority of the room, and the walls had been painted a soft-pink almost peach colour and lamps lay nestled on them. The lamps gave their room a beautiful peaceful glow.

The following day, their group headed to the CN Tower. They quickly learned that the CN Tower was a memorial for those who had fought in the civil war between the Daywalkers and the Nightwalkers. The fallen tower itself had each and every name engraved upon the main body of it.

Once they finally drove up to the tower, they all clambered out and headed inside. It was definitely much warmer in there than it was outside and much nicer. The tower had all sorts of exhibits that talked about what Toronto was like before the outbreak hap
pened, and how lively the city was. As they were looking around, Ronan could have sworn that the guy that stood a few feet away from them was watching them. When he turned his head to check, the guy appeared to be looking elsewhere.

Grabbing Theo's sleeve, Ronan tugged roughly at the soft cotton fabric of his sleeve, "Hey is it just me or is that guy over there watching me?" he asked, anxiously.

Turning his head, Theo raised his eyebrows as concern appeared on his features.

"Are you sure? You could have just imagined it," he said, as he glanced back towards the man but found nothing wrong when he did.

"I didn't pick up on anything when I looked."

"But I'm almost certain he was looking," he replied, clearly nervous, "And when I looked for myself? His eyes were looking elsewhere."

Theo clapped a firm hand on his shoulder and shot Ronan a reassuring glance.

“Well I’m sure it was nothing, so don't worry too much, alright?”

  “Okay, fine.”

Just as they were headed back towards their group, they were suddenly surrounded by a group of six men. Ronan turned to Theo and yelled for him to run.

Instead he shook his head and yelled back, “Never! I’m not leaving you!”

He furiously struggled against the man who was pinning him to his body, and made it extremely difficult for him to move.

“Don’t argue Theo! Now isn't the time to be stubborn or heroic!” he furiously shot back.

Theo snarled furiously, his eyes having momentarily flashed amber, “Absolutely not! You're my best friend and I refuse to let you get harmed or worse!”

As they were trying to fight the others off, a slightly older man entered the small space they were in. The man quickly then began snapping each of their necks with ease and then as quickly drained them.

Once he had finished, the man turned slowly towards them, both his hands and lips blood soaked. He then wiped his bloody hands on his jeans, and smiled in a reassuring way and cleared his throat, both his gaze and lean body, tense.

“I don't mean any harm believe me,” he said, as his lips curled into a small, nervous smile, “My name is Xavier Caine and I am friends with your biological mom and dad, as well as being their most trusted,” he continued, “I remember when you were just four years old, rambunctious and so full of energy,” he said.

“How?” Ronan asked, as both dread and disbelief began to flutter in his stomach, “You know my parents?”

“It began the day you were to turn four,” Xavier said, “Both of your parents were so proud, you were a vibrant boy and were the exact spitting image of your father, but I may be biased,” he went on as a fond smile briefly appeared on his features.

“Anyway, I’m getting off course. The following day was your actual birthday and your parents had a whole party planned just for you.”

Frowning in confusion, he looked down at Xavier, “Had? What do you mean, had?” I asked.

Xavier brought his knees upwards and placed his forearms on them and looked up, catching my gaze.

“That day, there was an attack on the castle and I had to get you and your parents out,” he said, “They had to be hidden in a secret location and you were put in the custody of the man and woman that you’ve called your parents for all these years,” he continued “If you'd like I can take you to meet them.”

Theo who had been silent up until now spoke up, “Hold up Ronan,” he said, “How can we be sure if anything he says is true? He could be lying about everything.”

Theo raised a few good points, how could I really trust him when I just met him?

“We’ll give you the benefit of the doubt for now,” he said, after a while, “ But try anything and know that Theo is a full-blooded alpha male, who will tear you to bits if you harm me, understood?”

  “Understood,” Xavier replied.

Getting to his feet, he brushed himself off, “Let’s get going, shall we?” He asked.

Xavier led them towards the cab that was waiting for them. They clambered in, and 20 minutes later, they finally stopped at a park which was located in the St. James area in downtown Toronto.

The campsite that Xavier brought them to that was being used a safe haven was a large, secluded wooded area. It was home to many different types of trees and had a cool atmosphere and was very shaded and it just happened to be steps away from Toronto’s harbourfront. Xavier then led the two of them around the camp and only stopped when they reached a young man and who looked a great deal like Ronan. He was so confused, who were these people and why did they look so much like him?

“Ronan, I’d like to introduce you to Garrett and Hayley Adams,” he said, “The rightful vampiric king and queen and your mother and father.”

  Chapter Three

Ronan’s father Garrett Adams stood at six foot one being just an inch shorter than Ronan. It was Garrett who Ronan looked most like, while his wife, Ronan’s mother, Hayley stood at five foot three and was a genuine beauty.

“But wait hold on, aren’t the both of you King Garrett and Queen Hayley?” Ronan asked, “We learned all about you in our history class and how President Adams overthrew you and that no one had heard from you in centuries!” he said, excitedly always having loved history, “You’re actually my parents? Really?”

“Yes,” Garrett replied, “We’re your birth parents,” he continued, “It’s nice to finally meet you, Ronan.”

Feeling unsure of what to do or say next, Ronan simply went with his gut feeling and approached them.

Turning to his mom, Ronan asked, “But why? I don't understand.”

“When the castle was attacked,” she continued, her gaze sympathetic, “Our main concern was getting you to safety, sweetie,” she went on, “With the danger at the time, you could have been killed and we couldn't let that happen.”

Ronan understood what his parents had intended to do to a certain degree, their undying loyalty and love for the concern that they would have held for him. Still that didn't mean that he wasn't upset. They did abandon him after all, and he was hurt and he was confused.

Garrett tightened his hold on Hayley’s shoulders just slightly and looked Ronan squarely in the eyes intently, “Please forgive us, Ronan or at least try to,” he asked, desperately.

Ronan finally stepped in closer to them as he allowed his father’s words to sink in, “It’ll take time, there were years of you not being there. I hope you can both understand.”

“Of course we can. It’s only natural that you need time,” Hayley replied, a sympathetic and understanding look in her eyes.

Figuring that Ronan would want to learn more about his past, Garrett gestured with his head indicating that Ronan should follow him. Getting to his feet, Ronan followed his father until the two of them were walking around the camp.

“So what exactly would you like to know first?” Garrett asked, curiously.

Releasing a deep breath, Ronan asked, “Could you start at the beginning?”

“Back in the year 2020,” Garrett said, “Xavier and I were both recruited for some trial runs for a vaccine that was supposed to be a cure for a disease that we had at the time named AIDS,” he continued, “Although at the time, even though AIDS wasn't killing people, a lot of the general population was becoming extremely ill.”

“What exactly happened during the trials?” Ronan asked, curiously.

“Nothing at first,” Garrett replied, “But when I woke up from being unconscious, something was different.”

  “Different how, exactly?”

“We didn't know at first, but when we later checked with others we finally had answers.”

“We had become Daywalkers, Nightwalkers, and Lycans,” he said, “The first ones, in fact. We are what the people of my time had called vampires and werewolves.”

“I don't think I've heard that word ever used, to be honest.”

  “You wouldn't. A lot has changed since I was turned I don't remember T
oronto being at all like this when I was still mortal.”

“What about Xavier, what happened to him?”

“Honestly, I’ve got no clue,” Garrett replied, “All that I know is that Xavier showed up at the castle gates looking like he'd been in a fight with a wood chipper.”

  “Really?”

  “Yep.”

  “Should we head back?”

  “Sure, Dad.”

Garrett and Ronan got to their feet and walked back towards the camp, Ronan’s thoughts filled with what his father had told him. He had questions of how Toronto was before the outbreak, and had plans to do research to find out.

Finally getting back as they settled in for dinner, Hayley walked over and sat down, a cautious smile on her face.

“So sweetie, how do you like everything here so far?”
